Image sourced from CityAM.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The project \u2013 the first since a <a href=\"https:\/\/heraldsheets.com\/world-mobile-is-raising-40m-in-cardano-based-token-sale-to-connect-african-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">successful $40 million raise<\/a> \u2013 will deliver coverage and access to the digital economy for over 1 million people in Zanzibar by the end of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bringing Africa online<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the first step in World Mobile\u2019s mission to help bring nearly four billion people online before 2030 in line with the UN and World Bank\u2019s SDGs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from the United Nations shows almost half of the world\u2019s population, 3.7 billion people, the majority of them women, and most in developing countries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2021\/dsgsm1579.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">are still offline<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond Zanzibar, World Mobile is in discussions with government officials in Tanzania and Kenya, as well as other territories underserviced by traditional mobile operators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It plans to have 20 mesh sites \u2013 local Wi-Fi nodes \u2013 rolled out by January 2022 and 120 sites during the first six months of 2022 including the first aerostat balloon launch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rollout will cover approximately 75% of Unguja Island and provide access to the wider digital economy including communications, e-commerce, finance, healthcare, and education to the islands\u2019 896 thousand people.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Micky Watkins, CEO of World Mobile said: <em>\u201cWe want to help create a world where everyone can access affordable connectivity, a world where economic freedom is a truth and a world where people are able to jump on the opportunities that internet creates.
