Microsoft is set<\/a> to buy Activision Blizzard, the company behind video games including Call of Duty<\/em>, World of Warcraft<\/em>, and Candy Crush<\/em>, in a nearly $70 billion all-cash deal.<\/p>\n

Microsoft\u2019s largest-ever takeover will make it the world\u2019s third largest gaming company by revenue after Sony and Tencent, according to a company statement<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all,\u201d Microsoft CEO and chair Satya Nadella said today (Jan. 18).<\/p>\n

It may not be coincidental that the deal comes as Activision is\u00a0clearing house in response to allegations of sexual harassment and other types of misconduct at the company.<\/p>\n

The deal is about mobile gaming<\/h2>\n

Mobile devices are by far the most popular way people play video games; in 2020 the mobile gaming industry brought in $77.2 billion<\/a> in US revenue. Microsoft said it plans to capitalize on this trend with the Activision deal, allowing players to enjoy the video game developer\u2019s \u201cmost-immersive franchises,\u201d including Halo<\/em> and Warcraft<\/em>, \u201cvirtually anywhere they want.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsoft already sells the Xbox gaming console, and owns several popular video game franchises, including Minecraft<\/em> and Doom<\/em>. In addition to immersive games such as Call of Duty<\/em>, Activision also owns<\/a> Candy Crush<\/em>, which is the sixth highest grossing mobile game of all time<\/a>. Microsoft said Activision\u2019s mobile business \u201crepresents a significant presence and opportunity\u201d.<\/p>\n

Activision has\u00a0fired dozens of employees over workplace misconduct<\/h2>\n

Activision continues to deal with allegations of sexual harassment and other misconduct at its offices, which employ some 10,000 people globally.<\/p>\n

Activision agreed to pay $18 million<\/a> to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in September to settle a case regarding alleged gender-based harassment and retaliation in its workplace. The Securities and Exchange Commission and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing are continuing to investigate Activision\u2019s culture and handling of these harassment allegations.<\/p>\n

A company spokesperson confirmed to the Wall Street Journal today (Jan. 18) that Activision had fired or pushed out more than three dozen employees as part of their efforts to address these allegations. An additional 44 workers have been disciplined as part of Activision\u2019s investigation.\u00a0The spokesperson disputed reports<\/a> that Activision has collected over 700 reports from employees concerned about workplace conduct and other issues since July.<\/p>\n

So far, the man at the center of these allegations remains part of the Microsoft takeover. Bobby Kotick is still Activision\u2019s CEO despite reports<\/a> that he knew about and downplayed allegations of sexual misconduct at the company. Microsoft said today Kotick will continue as CEO and his team will \u201cmaintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the company\u2019s culture and accelerate business growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
