The company also plans to cut 2,800 jobs, representing 20% of its corporate workforce. \u201cWhile I will always be Peloton\u2019s most loyal member and biggest supporter, I couldn\u2019t think of a better CEO for Peloton\u2019s next stage of growth than Barry McCarthy,\u201d Foley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">Reports over the weekend suggested the likes of Nike and Amazon are circling the carcass of a pandemic star, <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2114746\/peloton-hires-mckinsey-to-review-its-cost-structure\/\">whose stock has fallen precipitously<\/a> since gyms reopened. The corporate reshuffle looks like the board\u2019s first step towards an eventual takeover.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"et6CV\">Poor performance brings Foley\u2019s leadership into question<\/h2>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">The price of Peloton shares dropped by 35% in early November when the company cut its annual revenue forecast by as much as $1 billion, and has continued to slide as the firm battles additional <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2101978\/peloton-doesnt-care-about-your-and-just-like-that-spoilers\/\">PR disasters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">The company\u2019s poor performance brought CEO John Foley\u2019s leadership into question, and on Jan. 24, an activist investor with Blackwells Capital called on Peloton to fire its co-founder and pursue a sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">Blackwells intensified its criticism of Foley in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackwellscap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BW_Peloton_Presentation_Feb072022.pdf\">presentation<\/a> (pdf) published yesterday (Feb. 7), arguing the executive continued to express optimism about Peloton\u2019s growth throughout 2021 even as the company saw revenue and users decline. As a result, shareholders have suffered: Peloton stock <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/02\/24\/worst-performing-stock-2021-nasdaq-peloton-fit-tech-at-home-fitness-stocks-apple-lululemon-mirror-nike-under-armour-strava\/\">fell 76%<\/a> in 2021, worse than any other company listed on the Nasdaq exchange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">McCarthy touted his understanding of content-driven subscription models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/peloton-ceo-john-foley-to-step-down-become-executive-chair-11644314403?mod=hp_lead_pos2\">in an interview<\/a> with the Wall Street Journal, which could valuable to a company that has had more luck selling subscriptions than bikes in the past year. Revenue from Peloton\u2019s Connected Fitness unit, which sells products including the $1,500 exercise bike, declined by 8% in the quarter ending Dec. 31, the company reported yesterday. The average\u00a0number of monthly workouts also continued to decline after peaking in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">At the same time, Peloton\u2019s subscriptions climbed last quarter as revenue grew by 73% from the previous year, to $337.5 million. Subscriptions now represent 30% of the company\u2019s total revenue. Blackwell Capital investors cited Peloton\u2019s recurring subscription-based revenue model as an asset for the company should it seek a sale.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"et6CV\">Amazon is rumored to be in talks to buy Peloton<\/h2>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">Disney, Apple, and Nike have all been floated as <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2116043\/why-nike-apple-amazon-or-soulcycle-should-buy-peloton\/\">potential buyers<\/a> for Peloton, whose value has fallen from $50 billion to around $8 billion in recent months. Peloton shares rose by 30% last week when the Wall Street Journal reported<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>retailer Amazon has been speaking to representatives with the company about a potential sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cyhZ9\">Any\u00a0potential buyer that does step forward will likely need sign-off from Foley, who has roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/07\/peloton-shares-up-on-takeover-talks-heres-why-a-deal-might-not-work.html\">80% voting control<\/a> along with other insiders at the
