What did investors learn? Central bankers believe the economy could be in a strong enough place for the Fed to begin winding down its pandemic-era stimulus measures before the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dow slipped 382.59 points, or 1.1%, to 34,960.69. The S&amp;P 500 also fell nearly 1.1% to 4,400.27. Both averages fell despite snapping five-day winning streaks in the prior session. Investors also pored through earnings reports from major retailers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, what do the reports say?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of Lowe jumped 9.5% after the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/18\/lowes-low-earnings-q2-2021-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">reported better-than-expected earnings<\/a> and raised its sales forecast. The home improvement company\u2019s attempt to win business among home professionals gained traction, helping its stock to soar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lowe\u2019s shares closed Wednesday up 9.59% to $199.73.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of T.J. Maxx also popped nearly 5.6% after the company\u2019s earnings last quarter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/18\/tj-maxx-owner-beats-sales-estimates-as-customers-return-to-stores.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">topped expectations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, Target shares dropped about 2.8% despite <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/18\/target-tgt-q2-2021-earnings.html\" target=\"_blank\">beating its second-quarter
