The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.13% to close at 4,522.68, while the Nasdaq Composite was down just 0.04% to 15,259.24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuesday marked the last trading day of August, with the major averages posting solid gains for the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=560 height=349 src=https:\/\/player.cnbc.com\/p\/gZWlPC\/cnbc_global?playertype=synd&#038;byGuid=7000207608 frameborder=0 scrolling=no allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen ><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Join our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.community.ancstockinvestments.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trading Community<\/a>&nbsp;for more signals!&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 surged 2.9% in August, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq jumped 4% for its third winning month in a row. The blue-chip Dow lagged but still climbed 1.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the S&amp;P\u2019s longest winning streak since December 2017. For the benchmark index, August was also its 9th positive month in the last 10. The S&amp;P notched its 53rd record close of 2021 on Monday but there\u2019s more upside ahead for the index as it is expected to rise another 1.6% to 4,600 by year-end. If this upside continues, the index could hit 5,000 by the end of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"410\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ancstockinvestments.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screenshot-2021-09-01-130829.jpg\" alt=\"S&amp;P 500 Slips, Still on Track for 7th Straight Positive Month\" class=\"wp-image-848 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ancstockinvestments.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screenshot-2021-09-01-130829.jpg 648w, https:\/\/ancstockinvestments.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screenshot-2021-09-01-130829-300x190.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 648px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 648\/410;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>S&amp;P 500\u2019s surge comes even as the delta variant of COVID-19 has raised concerns about the path for economic recovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Google\u2019s parent company Alphabet Inc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/31\/google-delays-return-to-office-to-january-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">delayed its voluntary return to office<\/a> to January from mid-October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, 10 out of 11 sectors rose, led by financial stocks with a gain of 5%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ailing stocks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparel company Nike was one of the biggest losers in the Dow, falling nearly 2%. Materials stocks including Nucor and chemical company Dow also struggled in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of Zoom dropped about 16% on Tuesday after the video-conferencing software firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/30\/zoom-zm-earnings-q2-2022.html?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_content=Main&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1630354894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">showed slowing revenue growth<\/a> in quarter two, weighing heavily on the Nasdaq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tech giant, Apple, also declined, but Amazon\u2019s stock rose 1% to help offset those losses for the broader markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of Wells Fargo fell more than 5% after Bloomberg News reported that the bank could face further sanctions amidst Fargo\u2019s previous scandals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the S&amp;P 500 recorded a 20% gain, without even a 5% pullback on its stock price, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"finishing the week in the green (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ancstockinvestments.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/29\/major-indexes-finish-week-green-fed-prepares-taper\/\" target=\"_blank\">finishing las<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ancstockinvestments.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/29\/major-indexes-finish-week-green-fed-prepares-taper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"finishing the week in the green (opens in a new tab)\">t<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"finishing the week in the green (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ancstockinvestments.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/29\/major-indexes-finish-week-green-fed-prepares-taper\/\" target=\"_blank\"> week in the green<\/a> along with other stocks. The benchmark index has more than doubled since its pandemic low in March 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is already on track to post an earnings growth rate of 95.4% as the second-quarter reporting season winds down.
