Investing in Gold: Should You Trust this Precious Metal with Your Money?

Investing in gold can be such the undertaking. On the one hand, it’s natural for an investor to wonder if investing in gold is a good investment or not. On the other, the process of investing in gold is almost different from that of other investments.

In today’s world, gold is so important that it has become synonymous with the word wealth. Despite this, having gold, nuggets, coins, or futures does not mean your portfolio value is rising or safe. Let’s talk about gold features as well as usage in an investment portfolio.

Gold has a long history of use as currency or as reserved backing for other forms of money. Most gold supplied in the market needs the ability to change perspective over time.

If gold bars or Krugerrand (a one-ounce South African gold coin) are purchased, then the physical possession of that gold remains the same irrespective of the market price.

Ownership is for the sake of ownership regardless of any gain in price. But know that investment is a choice to risk capital with the hope of making gains.

The golden value of gold

The major difference between buying gold and other assets is that the value of gold might go up and down and change in the market but will never be worth nothing.

To diversify your portfolio means varying the asset classes. Stocks are one asset class and gold is another but owning company stock means owning equity in a company. The value goes up and down, changes with the market and the paper certificate can be worth nothing. On the other hand, gold, despite the changes, its value can never be worth nothing.

In planning your portfolio, also take into consideration the intent. Is the intent to increase wealth or to have gold which can at anytime be traded? Having the knowledge of the market will help you understand if whether or not, your investment in gold will increase your wealth.

Gold held for an emergency is different from buying a futures contract (a legally binding agreement for the delivery of gold in the future upon an agreed price) or stock in a gold mining company. Holding gold for emergencies does not necessarily increase wealth. It can be part of one’s wealth but can decrease in value too.

Investing in gold

Buying gold is equivalent to buying a physical asset, say a house. This is because whether the price of the gold/home goes up, you still have a home to live in and it’s part of your estate.

In contrast, buying shares of an exchange-traded fund like SPDR gold shares and the price goes up from your buying price, you have lost money and the paper might even become worthless.

To invest in the gold market, you can either buy a physical commodity (gold) or buy a futures contract. Buying the physical commodity (gold) is to have ownership despite the fact that the price will always fluctuate. Buying a futures contract or stock speculation means you do not own any gold but can make a profit.

Ownership of gold is accomplished only by purchasing gold bullion.

Although gold has many benefits for investors, holding gold does not ensure the appreciation of assets. The Midas touch is really just good money management.
