FOREX trading strategies are essential to keep a trader disciplined and focused and are one of the most important aspects of currency trading. When done right, a good Forex trading strategy can help you make profits in the market.

However, not all strategies are created equal and some may work better in certain situations and for particular traders. Each individual trader, therefore, needs to find the best FOREX trading strategy that works for them.

But first..

What is FOREX?

The word FOREX is a combination of the words foreign currency and exchange. The practice of converting one currency into another for reasons such as commerce, trading or tourism is known as foreign exchange. The FOREX market can be volatile as trading currencies can be risky and complex due to the large trade flows in the system. Simply put, the foreign exchange (FOREX or FX for short) market is a global marketplace for exchanging national currencies.

The FX market is where various currencies are exchanged. It is a decentralized and continuous marketplace that is not controlled by an individual, institution, or governmental body. It operates a 24/5 system. This means that when the market closes for one continent, it is opened in another continent and vice versa. Yes, certain trends can be affected by these bodies but they do not control the entire market.

FOREX Trading Strategies

A FOREX trading strategy is a plan that uses analyses to identify market conditions and price levels. There are various strategies employed in FOREX trading and these strategies are unique to every trader. These include Swing trading, Trend trading, Position trading, Day trading, Algorithmic trading, News trading, Scalping, Retracement trading, and Grid trading. The choice of a trading strategy is mostly dependent on the trader.

Trend Trading

This type of trading involves trading in a particular direction of the price trend – upward or downward. The trader must first identify the direction, duration, and strength of the trend and be prepared for reversal.

The trader does not need to know the exact direction or timing of the reversal – they just need to know when to exit their current position to lock in their profits and limit their potential losses. This is usually considered a reliable and consistent strategy for trading and so to trade efficiently, it is important for the trader to confirm the direction and strength of a new trend before entering into a position.

Swing Trading

This is a type of trading that follows the Trend trading strategy and this aims to capitalize on short-term surges in price momentum. These surges are smaller and their dips might go against the current trend direction, hence demanding a more limited outlook.

Swing trading requires quick action and close market oversight and so it is mostly used as a strategy by Day traders who are available to monitor changes in the price momentum from minute to minute. This strategy relies heavily on both fundamental and technical analysis to analyze market trends for minimizing losses or locking in profits.

Day Trading

This is a trading strategy that is short-term and involves the buying and selling of financial assets with an aim of closing out of positions by the end of the day to make profits from the price momentum. Day traders use a variety of short-term strategies to maximize profits – news, scalping, and trend trading.

The primary aim of a Day trader/trading is to maximize and lock in profits before the market closes for the day in their region. Day trading requires more experience and familiarity with the market to be successful and the traders must practice effective money management and discipline to respond swiftly to price changes.

Scalping

This is a trading strategy in which traders buy and sell foreign currencies with the goal of getting small profits from each trade. This is usually done based on an already ongoing analysis of price momentum.

When a scalper buys at a current market price, they are usually of the opinion that the price will rise enough to cover the spread and allow them to get a small profit i.e the bid price must rise above the initial ask price and flip the currency before the price fluctuates again.

Position Trading

This is a strategy in which traders hold their trading positions for a long period of time. It is a long-term trading strategy and the timeframe could span from a few weeks to a couple of years depending on the trader. This approach requires traders to take a macro view of the market and sustain smaller market fluctuations that counter their position.

Position traders use a trend trading strategy and they rely on analytical data to identify the market trends for ideal entry and exit points. The success of a position trader depends on the trader’s ability to understand the market, manage risks and lock in profits from time to time.

Algorithmic Trading

This is a trading strategy that uses an automated process for placing trades and orders by utilizing trading instructions to account for variables such as price, volume, and trading time. And it is considered that 40% of the world performs algorithmic trading and in the US, the trading market contributes 70% towards algorithmic trading.

Algorithmic trading offers instant and accurate trade order placement, helps to decide trade timing to avoid significant price fluctuations, and the trades executed using this strategy are usually at the best possible prices and hence help minimize future risk of losses.

The following are the key elements to look out for in a FOREX trading strategy.

  • Clarity on what instruments to trade
  • An Entry system
  • Money management
  • Stop loss and target profit
  • Position sizing and maximum risk per trade
  • Trade management
  • The proper mental approach

FOREX Trading Strategy Analysis

Trading analysis, simply put, are ways to look at the market. There are many ways traders analyze the financial market and these include carrying out sentiment analysis, fundamental analysis, and technical analysis. These all have their special uses and importance.

Sentiment analysis helps to determine whether the financial market is bearish or bullish (losing or gaining) on the current market price.

Fundamental analysis takes a look at a country’s economy to determine whether a currency will increase or decrease. This is the study of the economic, social, and political forces that affect the supply and demand of a financial asset and the factors that influence its price.

Technical analysis is the study of the currency price movement using charts of lines or graphs to determine the best points of entry and exit in the marketplace.

FOREX trading analysis helps to answer questions such as when and why.

Modifying Trading Strategies

This is a technique for tailoring a trading strategy to each trader’s specific needs. Understanding that every trader is different and capable of achieving so much is a crucial first step.

  • How long do you want to spend each day looking at charts?
  • Can you handle positions that last a long time?
  • Do you favor quick trades?
  • What level of risk do you feel comfortable with, and how much loss can you take?

The ability to identify exit and entry points determines how much a trader is willing to lose on a trade. Some traders prefer to start a new trade as soon as their indicators line up to provide a strong signal. This is an example of an entry and exit point. Others would prefer to enter at the close of the candle while others would prefer to wait until a candle closes to enter. This shows that for every trading technique, the individual’s particular personality and psychology play a key role in how they carry out a FOREX trade.

Learning FOREX for the First Time

Before you can start trading FOREX, you must first gain an understanding of how the FOREX market functions and how successful FOREX traders succeed in the markets. The FX market is a highly volatile, high-risk market with a great potential for profit or loss. You can trade whenever you want because it is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

The initial step is to sign up with an authorized FOREX broker like IronFX. There are many options, and the decision is typically impacted by the company’s reputation, the trading conditions they provide, and the size of the business.

FOREX Brokers

A FOREX broker is a business that offers financial services to the FX market and gives traders access to a marketplace where they may buy and sell foreign currency. Normally, pairs are used to complete these operations.

The majority of brokers allow their clients to trade in foreign currencies, including those of developing nations. For instance, a trader who wants to convert European euros into US dollars will purchase the EUR/USD pair, which means they are purchasing euros using dollars, while a USD/EUR pair signifies they are purchasing dollars using euros. The vendor sells the pair, which involves purchasing US dollars (USD) with euros, to complete the transaction.

The trader makes a profit if the exchange rate is higher when the trade is closed and a loss if it is lower. There are many FOREX brokers available to help FOREX traders – old and new –  to make trades on their platforms.

Among the many FOREX brokers available, IronFX stands tall. They are a broker based in Cyprus that gives traders access to the global foreign exchange market.

The company’s mission is to provide exceptional service to all clients, whether they are retail or institutional, by providing a broad selection of products, competitive spreads, and unmatched trading conditions. They are well-regarded and well-known internationally, and they provide exceptional customer service. They also provide favorable trading circumstances to help increase profits and reduce losses.
